Updated: All Medicaid providers must have active CHAMPS enrollment
Feb. 20, 2018, update:
CHAMPS requirement deadlines delayed
The Michigan Department of Health & Human Services (MDHHS) is delaying the implementation of the CHAMPS requirement. Therefore, Priority Health will not be denying claims as of March 1 for providers not enrolled in CHAMPS.
Specifically, here's part of the statement from MDHHS:
"… The number of enrollments in the queue requiring processing is more than we can approve by the March 1 deadline. We are in the process of adding additional resources to our Provider Call Center and Provider Enrollment Section to meet the demand, but that will not happen in time to address the backlog by the March 1 claims edit deadline.
"Given this information, we will be delaying both the implementation dates of March 1 for denying claims for typical non-enrolled providers, and May 1 for denying pharmacy claims for non-enrolled prescribers. We will continue to monitor the volume of enrollments received and processed. Once we are confident that we have sufficient resources to process enrollments timely, we will select new enforcement dates and provide at least 60 days advance notice for turning on the edits …."
Original Jan. 1 news item:
As of January 1, 2018, all providers furnishing services to Michigan Medicaid beneficiaries, including providers participating in a managed care organization's provider network, are required to be screened and obtain active enrollment in the Michigan Medicaid program. The purpose of this requirement is to strengthen the Medicaid program integrity by preventing provider fraud. Providers are required to enroll by January 1, but Priority Health will not deny claim payments for a provider not enrolled in CHAMPS until March 1, 2018.
How to enroll
Enroll through Community Health Automated Medicaid Processing System (CHAMPS) - the state's web-based Medicaid enrollment and billing system. MDHHS has already notified all providers via bulletin in February.
Enrollment in CHAMPS neither requires nor mandates providers who are part of a managed care network to accept Fee-for-Service Medicaid beneficiaries. Enrollment in CHAMPS is solely used for the purpose of screening providers participating in Medicaid.
