For young adults just starting out on their own, health coverage options can feel overwhelming. Whether you're a student, working part-time or transitioning off a parent’s plan, there are several affordable and flexible coverage options available to you. Here’s what you need to know.
Staying on a parent’s health plan until age 26
Thanks to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), you can stay on a parent’s health plan until you turn 26, even if you:
- Are married
- Don’t live with your parents
- Are not financially dependent on them
- Are eligible for your own employer-sponsored plan
If you're under 26 and not currently enrolled in your parents' health insurance coverage, you may qualify to join their plan during Open Enrollment or a Special Enrollment Period triggered by a qualifying life event.
Transitioning off a parent’s plan
When you turn 26, you’ll need to find your own health insurance. This milestone qualifies you for a Special Enrollment Period, giving you 60 days before and after your birthday to enroll in a new plan. Your options include:
Employer-sponsored plans
If you’re working and your employer offers health coverage, you can enroll in their plan. This is often a cost-effective option, especially if your employer covers part of the premium.
Medicaid and CHIP
If your income is limited, you might qualify for Medicaid, which provides free or low-cost coverage. Eligibility varies by state, but many states have expanded Medicaid to cover more low-income adults. If you have children, they may qualify for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
Health Insurance Marketplace plans
You can also purchase your own ACA plan through the Health Insurance Marketplace. Depending on your income, you may qualify for financial assistance:
- Premium tax credits to lower your monthly payments
- Cost-sharing reductions to reduce out-of-pocket costs
Choosing the right health plan for young adults
When selecting a plan, consider:
- Monthly premium vs. out-of-pocket costs
- Whether your preferred doctors and hospitals are in-network
- Prescription drug coverage costs
- Your typical health care needs
