In today's fast-paced world, accessing health care has become more convenient than ever. Virtual care options are designed to meet your needs wherever you are. Whether it's a routine check-up or an urgent medical concern, virtual care provides a flexible and efficient way to connect with healthcare providers.

What is virtual care?

Virtual care, also known as telehealth, allows you to consult with health care providers via phone, computer, smartphone app, or tablet. This means you can receive medical advice, diagnoses and treatment plans without leaving your home.

Benefits of virtual care

  • Convenience: Access healthcare from the comfort of your home, eliminating the need for travel and waiting rooms.
  • Flexibility: Schedule appointments at times that suit your busy lifestyle, including nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Cost-effective: Many virtual care services are affordable, with some plans offering $0 visits.

How does virtual care work?

Scheduling an appointment

You can schedule virtual care appointments through your health plan's member portal or directly with your health care provider's office. This process is typically straightforward and can be done online.

Preparing for your appointment

Most virtual care visits are conducted via video call. Before your appointment, ensure you have a device capable of video calls, such as a smartphone, tablet, or computer, and a stable internet connection. Finding a quiet, private space for your appointment will help ensure a comfortable and confidential environment.

Joining the virtual call

You will likely receive a link or instructions to join the call at the scheduled time. This link will guide you to a secure and private connection with your health care provider.

During the appointment

At the time of your appointment, you'll connect with your health care provider via a telephone or video call. Some providers also use e-forms and messages for communication. Your provider will discuss your symptoms, medical history and any concerns you have. They can diagnose your condition, recommend a treatment plan and prescribe medications if necessary.

Using home monitoring devices

In some cases, you might use devices at home to monitor your vital signs, such as breathing, heart rate and blood pressure. The medical staff can review these results remotely and reach out if there are any concerns or changes.

Prescriptions and follow-up care

If needed, your provider can prescribe medication during the virtual visit. Depending on your condition, you might be advised to come in for an in-person checkup or, in urgent situations, visit the emergency room. After your virtual appointment, follow-up information, including any prescriptions or recommendations, will be available in your patient portal, on your device or sent via email. This ensures you have all the necessary details to continue your care seamlessly. You can schedule follow-up virtual visits or in-person appointments if needed.
