Is the Healthy Michigan Plan the same as Medicaid?

Is the Healthy Michigan Plan the same as Medicaid? 

Yes. The Healthy Michigan Plan (HMP) is Michigan’s Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Medicaid is a program run by both the federal and state governments. It gives health coverage to people who qualify. The federal government sets rules, but each state runs its own program. This means benefits and eligibility can change by state. Michigan expanded Medicaid through the Healthy Michigan Plan. This expansion offers more benefits and wider eligibility for Michigan residents.

What is the Healthy Michigan Plan? 

The Healthy Michigan Plan is run by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). It offers 10 essential health benefits:

1. Ambulatory patient services 
2. Emergency services 
3. Hospitalization 
4. Maternity and newborn care 
5. Mental health and substance use disorder treatment 
6. Prescription drugs 
7. Rehabilitative and habilitative services 
8. Laboratory services 
9. Preventive and wellness services, including chronic disease management 
10. Pediatric services, including dental and vision care

How to enroll in Medicaid or Healthy Michigan Plan 

To apply for Medicaid in Michigan: 

1. Apply online at MI Bridges. Submit your financial and household details. 
2. Once approved, choose your health plan. If you don’t select one, you’ll be automatically assigned. 
3. To switch plans, call Michigan ENROLLS at 1-888-367-6557 (TTY: 711).

Who qualifies for the Healthy Michigan Plan? 

You may be eligible if you: 

• Are 19–64 years old
• Have income at or below 133% of the federal poverty level 
• Are not enrolled in Medicare
• Are not enrolled in other Medicaid programs 
• Are not pregnant at the time of application 
• Are a Michigan resident
