The American Medical Association (AMA) recently announced new obstetric (OB) CPT that will replace the bundled, global OB payment for maternity care services, effective Jan. 1, 2027. This change will impact both professional and facility providers.
We encourage providers caring for pregnant women to start using existing E/M codes when billing for patients starting their prenatal visits on / around June 1, 2026 – transitioning to the new codes when they go into effect in Jan. 2027.
By transitioning code use early, you ensure your billing / coding isn’t disrupted for pregnant patients presenting for their 8-10-week visits later this year.
Note: for patients undergoing prenatal care before June 1, 2026, and delivering before Jan. 1, 2027, you may continue to use the global OB codes.
See our Maternity Services billing policy (#071) for additional information.
