Interoperability

Accessing your health information

What is the interoperability and patient access rule?

In May 2020, the federal government announced a rule that increases patient access to health information. Through this rule, health plans must make patient claims data and provider directories available for members in the Medicare, Medicaid and individual markets.

This ruling helps improve the quality and accessibility of information that consumers need to make informed health care decisions.

What does this mean for Priority Health members?

You can now direct the sharing of your medical history and health plan records with other services and applications outside of Priority Health. Active Priority Health members with a member portal login can permit third-party applications to receive the following data:

  • All claims and medical history information that is stored and controlled by Priority Health;
  • Encounters with capitated providers; and
  • Clinical data, including laboratory results (when maintained by the payer)

Can I un-share my data once I allow a third-party application to have access?

  • No.
  • Once you allow the third-party application to receive your information, you are directing Priority Health to share data with that third party. Once that is done, we cannot undo it.
  • You will need to work directly with the third-party application to discuss the status of your data.
  • The permission, however, only lasts for a short time. The third-party application cannot keep getting new information unless you provide permission again.

Do the applications follow HIPAA?

Third-party applications are not required to follow HIPAA.

Should I share my data?

This is your decision. We cannot advise on whether you should do this or not.
