Priority Health Total Health Foundation to Support Rocket Mortgage Classic's Effort to End Detroit's Digital Divide

(DETROIT – June 20, 2024) - The Priority Health Total Health Foundation announced a $150,000 grant to support the Rocket Mortgage Classic’s “Changing the Course” initiative, which aims to bridge Detroit’s digital divide. The check presentation will be made during the AREA 313 Celebrity Scramble presented by Priority Health Total Health Foundation on Tuesday, June 25.

The AREA 313 Celebrity Scramble kicks off the Rocket Mortgage Classic PGA TOUR golf tournament being held for the sixth consecutive year, June 25-30 at Detroit Golf Club.

With support from the Priority Health Total Health Foundation, Rocket Mortgage Classic will continue to make progress toward its mission of connecting every Detroiter to high-speed internet, digital devices and digital training needed for improved learning, employment and well-being. Rocket Mortgage Classic has invested more than $4.3 million in the Changing the Course initiative since it was launched in 2020.

In the past four years, Detroit has grown from being the least connected large city in America to one with a nationally recognized digital inclusion model. Successes include:

  • The launch of 22 tech hubs across the city with 352 workstations that have served more than 29,000 residents across Detroit’s seven districts.
  • Distribution of 77,000 digital devices to the Detroit community.
  • Helping more than 162,000 Detroit residents get connected to the federal government’s Affordable Connectivity Program, the highest engagement rate in the country.

“A lack of digital access ranks as a ‘super determinant’ of health the same as education, employment and health care access and their impact on health outcomes,” said Shannon Wilson, executive director of the Priority Health Total Health Foundation. “We are committed to making sure every Detroiter is digitally literate as another avenue to eliminating health disparities.”

The Rocket Giving Fund – the 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that puts on the Rocket Mortgage Classic – works closely with a wide range of partners including Microsoft, United Way for Southeastern Michigan, Rocket Mortgage and the City of Detroit to execute the vision of Changing the Course.

“We are incredibly appreciative of the support from the Priority Health Total Health Foundation toward our mission to end Detroit’s digital divide,” said Jason Langwell, executive director of the Rocket Mortgage Classic. “Providing access to devices, connectivity and digital literacy has made a huge impact on the lives of so many Detroit residents in countless ways, and that wouldn’t be possible without organizations like the Priority Health Total Health Foundation.”
