6 things to consider when choosing an OB provider and pediatrician

Page last updated on: 3/15/25

As you navigate pregnancy, you’ll want to find the right OB provider for you. That’s because your OB provider is your medical expert during pregnancy. They’ll see you for routine visits, screenings and to answer your questions.

It’s also time to find the right pediatrician for baby. That way, you can check baby’s health the moment they arrive.

Let's look at both types of medical specialists.

What is an OB provider?

OB is short for obstetrician-gynecologist. That’s a medical doctor who specializes in female reproductive health. OB providers include traditional OBGYNs you’d find in a doctor’s office or hospital. Family Practice doctors and midwives are also OB providers. Your OB provider will deliver your baby when the time comes and check in with you regularly during pregnancy.

What is a pediatrician?

A pediatrician is a medical doctor who specializes in the care of babies and children. They help make sure your baby is healthy and growing. They can also offer important recommendations and provide routine vaccines. They also treat your baby if they get sick. It’s important to select a pediatrician either before or right after your baby arrives.

Here are 6 things to consider when choosing your providers

No matter which providers you choose, OB provider and pediatrician visits are covered by Medicaid. That means once your baby is on your plan, you won’t pay any costs. Learn more about your coverage.

If you need help finding an OB provider or pediatrician, you can use the ‘Find a Doctor’ tool in your Priority Health member account.

Here’s how:

  • Type “OB provider” or “pediatrician” in the search bar.
  • Use the filters on the left to narrow your results down. Be sure to filter by Specialty, that they provide Obstetrics and Gynecology medical services and that they’re accepting new patients.
  • There are other options to choose from such as the doctor’s primary language and gender.
  • Click on each provider to read more about them including their office location.

Make sure the providers you choose are taking new patients. Also, make sure they accept your Medicaid plan. You can do this by calling each doctor’s office and asking the receptionist.

You’ll visit your OB provider at least once a month during pregnancy. You’ll also bring your baby to the pediatrician several times within your baby’s first year. Getting to all your appointments can be difficult if your doctors are far away. Remember to check each doctor’s location as you weigh your decision.

Remember, if you need a ride to or from any of your OB provider or pediatrician appointments, we can help. You can schedule a ride at no charge. Get more information.

Don’t wait. Now that you know you’re expecting, connect with an OB provider as soon as possible. The same goes for your baby’s pediatrician. Nine months may seem like a while, but you’ll be surprised how quickly this special time can pass by.
