Opthalmology intraoperative and postoperative billing changes
Effective January 1, 2018, we are making two changes to opthalmology billiing.
Ophthalmology intraoperative services billing
For dates of service on or after Jan. 1, 2018, these services will be reimbursed at the intraoperative global surgical package percentage. In the past, we have included a preoperative component in the reimbursement for these services incorrectly.
Postoperative services billing
For dates of service on or after Jan. 1, 2018, when postoperative care is split between the ophthalmologist and optometrist providers, report postoperative days in units (1 unit = 1 day), not to exceed 90 units. Units will reflect the number of days each provider performed care. Currently, this information is provided in the notes section of the claim.
