(GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – October 2, 2023) There is an update regarding a 2020 security incident involving EyeMed who manages vision benefits on behalf of Priority Health.
On July 1, 2020, EyeMed discovered that an unauthorized individual gained access to an EyeMed email mailbox and sent phishing emails to email addresses contained in the mailbox's address book. EyeMed took immediate action to block the unauthorized individual's access and secured the mailbox. EyeMed also immediately launched an investigation into the incident and engaged a cybersecurity firm to assist in its efforts. On September 28, 2020, Priority Health was made aware of the security incident by EyeMed.
At the conclusion of that investigation, select individuals were notified in 2020 as a portion of their social security number may have been impacted. Despite the low risk of information being compromised, and the time that has elapsed since the incident, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights has requested that Priority Health notify an additional 36,600 Priority Health members who had their name and date of birth impacted in the 2020 incident. Priority Health is not aware of any instances of fraud or identity theft arising from the incident.
