Billing for Operating Microscope Use

To report microsurgical techniques that require the use of an operating microscope during a surgical session:
  • Use CPT code 69990.
  • Microsurgical techniques or microdissection must be documented in the operative notes.
  • Report this code in addition to the primary CPT code when this service is NOT considered a bundled component.
  • Do not use this code to report an operating microscope that was used solely to view the visual field.
