Free shoe grips for Medicare members
During the winter months, most of us in Michigan know the risks of a painful fall on the ice.
Inside the home, we can all remember a time when we tripped over a throw rug or stumbled
on the stairs. Clinical guidelines related to fall prevention recommend that on a yearly basis
all adults over the age of 65 years should be asked by a health care provider whether they
have had a fall; among those who report a fall, efforts should be directed at determining the
causes of falls and providing strategies to reduce future fall risks. As a health care provider, don’t miss your opportunity to provide fall prevention information to older adults. Fall
prevention counseling can be billed using CPT code 99401-99404 (codes in this range differ
only by the amount of time spent with member) and diagnosis code V65.43. Please remember
to document the prevention counseling that is discussed, along with the amount of time spent
counseling. To support your efforts, Priority Health is mailing Medicare members a coupon
for a free pair of shoe grips that can be redeemed after they have spoken to their primary care
physician about falls. Together we can reduce slips and falls this winter.
