Prescribing ACEI or ARB medications for Medicare patients with diabetes and high blood pressure

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is holding us accountable for ensuring that Medicare members who have diabetes and high blood pressure are taking an ACEI or ARB medication.

  • In June, we sent all providers a list of Medicare patients with diabetes and high blood pressure who may not be taking an ACEI or ARB.
  • We are planning to reach out to Medicare members on the same topic and will keep you informed as to when that communication will take place.

We realize that you diligently monitor your patients’ medication profile, and in some cases an ACEI or ARB may not be necessary. But to help your patients get the best health care experience possible:

  • Community pharmacists in our Medication Therapy Management program may contact you if they believe an ACEI or ARB may be right for your patient.
  • Tell your patients to show their Priority Health member ID card for every prescription, so our system can monitor for potential issues. Assure them that they’ll never pay more than the lowest cost available, even if their copay is higher.
  • If your patients struggle with adherence issues, refer them to Case Management by calling 800 998-1037 (select prompt 3).
