Fall prevention

Falling is the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries in older people. Slipping on ice, stumbling on a stair or a rug, and losing their balance often results in broken bones and cuts, or even traumatic brain injury. However, falls can be prevented. The best course of prevention often starts at home. Talk to your patients at risk of falls, especially the elderly population, regularly about making sure their environment is safe.

To reduce risks of falling, encourage patients to:
  • Exercise regularly to maintain flexibility, strength and balance.
  • Install safety devices, such as grab bars, in the shower and tub.
  • Eliminate hazards, such as loose throw rugs and tangled electrical wires.
  • Tell you if medication makes them dizzy or lightheaded.
  • Have their vision checked regularly — at least once a year.
