Six key messages on asthma

The Asthma Network of West Michigan has this message for providers regarding the treatment of members with asthma:
  • Inhaled corticosteroids are the most effective anti-inflammatory medication for the long-term management of persistent asthma.
All patients should receive:
  • A written asthma action plan
  • Initial assessment of asthma severity
  • Review of their level of asthma control (impairment and risk) at all follow-up visits
  • Periodic, follow-up visits (at least every six months)
  • Assessment of exposure and sensitivity to allergens and irritants and recommendation to reduce relevant exposures
