First generic ARB available – Step therapy removed
Generic Cozaar (losartan) and Hyzaar (losartan/HCTZ) are now available! Losartan is the first angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) to become available as a generic.
- The 2010 PIP generic measure for adult members focuses on select drug classes, including ACE inhibitors and ARBs.
- Step therapy requirements for generic Cozaar and Hyzaar have been removed.
- Step therapy remains in place for brand name ARBs (e.g. Diovan, Avapro). A generic ACE inhibitor or generic ARB must be tried first.
- Members taking brand name ARBs will save, on average, $360 per year by switching to a generic.
- In the coming months, we'll be working with PCPs and our members to inform them of this new generic option.
