Bronchitis and antibiotics reminder
Antibiotics don’t fight viral infections like bronchitis. Please continue to avoid prescribing antibiotics for most URIs.
Tips for discussing bronchitis with patients - Comment on pertinent positive/negative findings as you proceed with the exam.
- Explain the natural course of the illness, including symptoms/duration.
- Put forth an expression of hope for expectation of recovery.
- Offer a prescription and provide instructions for when it would be appropriate to fill it for those patients whose illness poses diagnostic uncertainty or logistical concerns (traveling, etc.).
- Keep in mind many patients will become convinced over time about the proper use of antibiotics. Not everyone will be convinced right away.
