Preconception planning
Preconception planning is being intentional about preparing for and starting pregnancies. It includes making decisions about when to have children, how many to have, how to time pregnancies, and how to ensure the healthiest pregnancies and families. It sometimes involves contraception, fertility-promoting actions or other behavior changes. Providers can start by asking women when they want their next (or first) pregnancy, if ever. Follow-up questions should focus on determining whether the member is doing everything possible to realize her goals for pregnancy. Address reproductive planning with everyone of reproductive age. Give special consideration to the needs of members who have diabetes, hypertension, depression, hepatitis B or HIV.
An assessment form designed for the member to complete, as well as practice management and member education materials, are available at priorityhealth.com/provider/clinical-resources/maternity. Additional resources are also available at www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/preconception/QandA.htm.
