Billing for operating microscope use
To report microsurgical techniques that require the use of an operating
microscope during a surgical session:
- Use CPT code 69990.
- Microsurgical techniques or microdissection must be documented in the
operative notes.
- Report this code in addition to the primary CPT code when this service
is NOT considered a bundled component.
- Do not use this code to report an operating microscope that was used
solely to view the visual field.
