Shared decision-making

Shared decision-making is the process of information sharing between a patient and physician that includes diagnosis, treatment options, and the benefits and risks of those options. At the Spine Centers of Excellence, patients share with their doctor in the decision-making about their treatment. When considering treatment options, the patient's values and goals are taken into account.

Use of DVDs

Included with the Priority Health Spine Centers of Excellence tools are informative, patient-focused DVDs on a wide range of conditions and diagnoses, including:
  • Herniated disc
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Acute low back pain
  • Chronic low back pain

These DVDs will help prepare patients for the process of deciding on a course of treatment. Family members can also benefit from the information on these DVDs.

Cost

DVDs are available at no cost to your practice. Request them by contacting Provider Services.

Tracking

DVDs and a return mailer envelope can be sent home with each patient. Your office can use the tracking sheet in Back & Neck Pain Clinical Resources to keep track of these DVDs.
