(Grand Rapids - April 25, 2008) - The Michigan Senate Health Policy Committee is expected to vote on Individual Market Reform legislation (HB 5282-5283) on April 30. The bills were introduced by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan in 2007 and were passed by the House of Representatives with very little discussion.
Since then, many have spoken out against these bills, noting they are bad health care policy because they are bad for Michigan. If they pass as written, these bills will create more uninsured adults and children. These bills would also raise premium rates for those who have coverage by creating a “high risk pool” that forces all insurers to subsidize losses created by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.
Priority Health supports changes proposed by Senator Tom George, chairman of the Health Policy Committee, because they will help keep the lid on health insurance costs, increase competition, protect small businesses and improve access to health coverage for the uninsured.
