(April 2008) - Be Healthy School Contest: Local students make being healthy easier
Kids say it best. Being healthy can be easy. That's why the Priority Health Cycling Team challenged fourth grade students from across Michigan to share their ideas for how to make their classmates' lives healthier.
More than 400 students sent us their suggestions for how they and their classmates could eat healthier and be more active. Eight students will be chosen as winners from across the state. Each winner will receive a healthy party for his/her class, with a visit from the Priority Health Cycling Team and $1,000 for the school's gym program. Winners will be notified in late April. Take a look at some of the kids' ideas and artwork:
Have you ever thought that you were active enough? That one gym class a month would keep you healthy and active forever? Well, sad to break this to you, but that’s just not how things work. -- Josie Well, first we could get better things than corn dogs and pizza; we could get fruit salad and vegetable soup. -- Alyssa At lunch, if your mom packs you chocolate for a snack, you can trade for fruit. -- Kaylie I think I can get my class to be more healthy by having us eat a healthy snack every day. I can also get my class to be healthier by having us run four laps outside each day. The thing I love about being healthy is that since I am healthy, I have more energy and I'm not sick as much anymore. -- Cassie Instead of drinking soda and juice every time you're thirsty, drink A LOT & I mean A LOT of water. It's very good for you. --Ariana To live healthy, you have to follow many things in your daily life schedule, such as exercise, sleep well, avoid adding stress to your life and spend more time with your family and friends. -- Heather How you can make a better health priority is by going roller skating, bowling, swimming, tennis, basketball, football, rugby, anything will get your active will work. -- Gyasi
For exercise, I could talk to the younger kids and tell them about how good it is for you to exercise then take them outside to run or walk a mile. -- Noelle Even though this letter is not long, it is real and can be shared with the world. --Allison Ditch the T.V. and Get Outside! -- Claire, Natalie, and Anahi I think there should be more field trips. There’s more room and fresh air. And that’s more healthy than a small heated classroom. -- Katherine Everyone, the principal, teachers, cook, custodians, and every child at Lincoln Elementary School will be fit! -- Emma I think carrots are the best vegetable to eat, they improve your eye sight, did you know that? -- Ramses It takes 21 days to break a bad habit and make a good habit, like playing video games, that is a bad habit. --Logan Exercise 30 minutes like jump rope, jumping jacks, and loosey goosey. --Jontaj Instead of eating regular chocolate, you can eat chocolate covered strawberries. --Carlie
