"Individual Market Reform" bad health care policy

Bill could mean more uninsured Michigan residents
November 16, 2007

The Individual Market Reform bill passed by the Michigan House of Representatives misses the mark. If this bill (HB 5282 – 5285) passes the Senate as written, it could lead to higher premium costs for Michigan residents while taking away their ability to select from a range of insurance carriers. This would increase the number of unemployed Michigan residents and could drive businesses from the state.

This bill was written by Michigan’s largest private insurer. It will help the insurance company that wrote it, but it won't help Michigan residents.

The bill is currently under review by the Senate Health Policy Committee chaired by Senator Tom George. A vote on this bill is expected during the first quarter of 2008. The powerful special interest groups behind this bill are moving it through the process quickly, and with as little discussion, as possible.
