HRA qualified expenses

The money in a health reimbursement arrangement (HRA) can be used to reimburse you for qualified health care expenses.

What are qualified expenses?

Your employer will customize your health plan to say which health care expenses the HRA can pay for. Examples may include:
  • Costs that apply to your deductible: Doctor visits, hospital stays and lab tests, etc.
  • Coinsurance (when you pay 20% of a health care cost, and the health plan pays the other 80%, for example) once you have met your deductible

Examples of expenses that often do not qualify

  • Set dollar copays, like a $30 office visit copay
  • Your deductible (if you have one) for prescription drugs

Going out-of-network

If you have a POS (point-of-service) or PPO (preferred provider organization) plan, you have a choice of paying more to see health care providers outside your plan's network. Your employer decides if your HRA will reimburse you for services you get outside your plan's network.
