Surgery smarts: Tips for a quicker recovery

It's vital to follow your doctor's directions for diet, medications and lifestyle — especially if you just had a medical procedure. Not knowing what to do after you're discharged from the hospital can send you back with a worse condition.

Team up with your doctor

Your doctor is committed to helping you get the best possible treatment. But it's your job to be sure you understand the services you're receiving and how to get the best outcomes. You might ask:

  • Can you explain why this treatment is best?
  • What other information should I know?
  • Are there other options?

Stay involved during hospital stays

While in the hospital, double-check that nurses and doctors are planning the right procedure. Also:

  • Ask your caregivers to wash their hands.
  • Find out what tests are being done and why.
  • Alert caregivers if you feel feverish or experience a bad reaction.
  • Be sure you understand the follow-up instructions.

Don't be shy. Speak up!

If you think something's not right, or your doctor is missing something, be persistent!
