Changes to coverage for OTC drugs on FSA, HSA
Beginning Jan. 1, 2011, if you want to use your pre-tax money for over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, you'll need a prescription. You don't need to submit the prescription to the pharmacy; you need it for your tax records and/or to submit with your reimbursement request. This is a change in the federal law as part of health care reform. The only exception is insulin.
Affected pre-tax health accounts include:
- FSA (flexible spending account)
- HSA (health savings account)
