Taking long-term drugs safely

If you're like most seniors, you're taking at least one prescription drug a week, or maybe more. Some drugs, when taken for a long time or in a high dose, can cause damage to the kidneys and other organs.

If you've been taking a drug for 6 months or longer, you may need to have some simple blood tests to determine if it's causing any harm.

Talk to your doctor about all of your drugs

This includes new medications, prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, dietary supplements and herbals. Your doctor can make sure you're taking your drugs correctly and help you avoid harmful side effects.

If you're taking any of the following drugs and don't get regular blood tests (sometimes monthly), it's especially important to talk with your doctor.

  • Blood thinners
  • ACE inhibitors or ARBs (high blood pressure medication)
  • Anti-seizure medication
  • Diuretics (drugs that help your body eliminate excess fluids)
  • Digoxin (heart medication)
