The time period called "annual open enrollment" (AEP) for Medicare plans is earlier in 2011.
Medicare beneficiaries have from Oct. 15 until Dec. 7 this year to sign up or to switch to a different plan. Plan changes will take effect on Jan. 1, 2012.
People who buy their own coverage - instead of having an employer-sponsored group Medicare plan - can choose from 3 Priority Health Medicare Advantage plans or a stand-alone prescription drug plan. Priority Health Medicare Advantage plans include the same coverage as Original Medicare, plus lots of extras such as prescription drug coverage, vision, hearing and dental coverage, plus a free fitness program.
People who are happy with their current Medicare plan can do nothing, and they will be automatically enrolled in the same plan for 2012.
