Medicare annual election period ends Dec. 7

(October 1, 2011)

Medicare beneficiaries have until Dec. 7 this year to sign up or to switch to a different plan.

Individuals who want to enroll in Medicare Advantage or Medicare prescription drug plans for January 2012, or who already have a Medicare plan and want to change to a different one, can start earlier this year. Last year, the annual election period to join, switch or drop a plan was Nov. 15 to Dec. 31. This year changes must be made from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7.

Plan changes will take effect on Jan. 1, 2012.

Individuals who are considering changing their coverage can choose from 3 Priority Health Medicare Advantage plans or a stand-alone prescription drug plan. Priority Health Medicare Advantage plans include the same coverage as Original Medicare, plus lots of extras such as prescription drug coverage, vision, hearing and dental coverage, plus a free fitness program.
