Preventive vs. diagnostic services:

Same services, covered differently, paid differently.

  • Preventive services include screenings, immunizations and physical examinations that help prevent illness BEFORE you have any symptoms. They are listed in our Preventive Health Care Guidelines, below. Preventive health care may also include other services and screenings not included in these guidelines when your doctor finds them necessary.
  • Diagnostic services are used to help your doctor understand your symptoms or "diagnose" your illness and decide what treatment you need. They may be the same tests that are listed as preventive services, but they being used as diagnostic services. Payment for these services must come out of your deductible until you have paid your deductible.
  • Common examples: When services are considered preventive or diagnostic
