Summer 2010

Sharing our innovations in Washington D.C.

With health reform sweeping the country, health care leaders and policymakers are looking for innovative approaches to care. As part of this effort, Priority Health CEO Kim Horn was recently invited to Washington D.C. to discuss two initiatives underway at Priority Health.

Making life easier for people with back and neck pain
Priority Health is a national leader in back pain management. Introduced in November 2007, our program ensures that members with back and neck pain fully understand all of their relevant options — both surgical and non-surgical — before receiving treatment. The result: a 26% reduction in spine surgeries with very positive member responses to a post-program satisfaction survey.

Patient-centered care: improving overall health
Priority Health is at the forefront of a serious concern: Statistically, patients today receive only half of the care they need due to a shortage of primary care providers. As a result, patients seek treatment through emergency room visits, which results in uncoordinated, episodic care and unnecessary hospitalizations.

Patient-centered care provides the right care at the right time. It:

  • Improves health through coordinated care
  • Controls health care costs
  • Provides professional satisfaction and fair reimbursements for physicians
