 Peter Olson, MD Dr. Peter Olson, one of only two solo practitioners among the Quality Award winners, has been practicing long enough to know the basic ingredient required to be an outstanding physician: passion. "I'm passionate about what I do," Dr. Olson says. "If you're not, you're not going to get your members to be passionate about their health." Dr. Olson's passion extends to the rigorous patient management system his practice employs, a system designed to ensure that nothing gets missed when it comes to patient care. Records are triple checked during each visit and thoroughly reviewed before authorizing prescription refills over the phone. "That check is done," Dr. Olson says. "We don't get reimbursed for it, but yes, we do it, because if we can do a better job, then, through things like the Physician Incentive Program, we get a reward." Armed with a wide-ranging grasp of evidence-based literature, Dr. Olson makes patient education a priority during office visits. He shares his knowledge with members when discussing their conditions and provides literature and the addresses of helpful Web sites. However, ultimately he believes that truly effective disease management is up to the patient. "My patients are partners in their care," Dr. Olson says. "I'm just a member of the team; everybody here is a member of the team, and so are the patients."
